Elliot Maxwell
M.A. Drama Therapy, CCC
Associate Therapist

Hi, my name is Elliot, and I am an Associate Therapist at Thrive Counselling. Since I was a child, I have always loved holding space for people to feel emotions and grow. I have always felt infinite awe towards this intrinsic inner healer within us all, this instinctive resilience. As an adult, I earned my master’s in Drama Therapy, became a member of NADTA and CCPA and began the journey of holding space in the professional realm.

As a drama therapist and Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC), I’ve realized that what I loved so long ago still holds true—there is immense healing in simply creating a present, attuned, and unconditional space for exploration. Humans can heal despite any struggles they may face.

I offer therapy services to individual adult clients with a client-centred, 2SLGBTQIA+ empowering, trauma-informed, and attachment-informed approach. I will help you discover that you are loved, lovable, and loving. I am merely a guide and witness to your inner healer, and together we will explore how to activate that healing ability and help you realize that you can manifest the life you want while rediscovering a deep love for yourself.

While I am clinically trained in Drama Therapy and will weave that into my sessions, my therapy work is also informed by Dr. Yalom’s teachings. The focus is primarily on existential psychology, the search for meaning in life, and how we respond to issues—either functionally or dysfunctionally. I also use a humanistic approach, leaning into understanding who we are, our self-image, self-esteem, and self-actualization.

Through metaphor and storytelling, you can work through trauma, relationship issues, anxiety, depression, and grief, discovering ways to move through problems and accept what you can’t change. Drama therapy allows for more playful, creative, and dynamic ways to confront pain and loss. It is especially effective for relationship issues, as we can role-play and actively find solutions. We can do projected future role plays to work through what to say in difficult conversations you’re anxious about—allowing you to engage in different outcomes and build confidence in speaking your truth. If someone is living “rent-free” in your mind, drama therapy can help externalize that person or inner part, giving them less power over you.

When I’m not practising therapy, my interests include films, reiki, oracle cards, crystal healing, astrology, Scorpio-fueled deep/spiritual chats, nature, and building a securely attached relationship with my cat. I identify as genderfluid and use he/she/they pronouns. If you feel called to, let’s begin (or return to) this healing journey together.
