Do I need to know a lot about IT to get connected to my secure video call?

Is there special equipment needed for a video session?

Is “secure video” really that important? Isn’t Skype or Zoom good enough?
At Thrive, your privacy is always our top priority. That is why we have partnered with a Canadian company that provides a fully encrypted platform that can accommodate multi-person therapy sessions. Their data centres are owned by them and not rented from third-parties outside of Canada, ensuring secure video therapy for Canadians.

When you and your partner are not connecting, it can cause a ripple effect to everything else that is important in your life. Maybe your bond has been slowly eroding over time, and the two of you have been pulled further and further apart. You may be feeling that things are hopeless.
With couples therapy, our focus is not the “sides” partners may take, but the space between the partners that is impacting the relationship.
Thrive Counselling therapists are clinically trained in various relational therapy models including Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy. EFT is an experiential therapy model with decades of research that has been proven to help couples become more attuned and attentive towards each other, and create secure bonds with one another. At the end of the day, we know our partner will be there for us like a safety net, and that is an amazing feeling.
Your Thrive Counselling therapist will support you and your partner and help you recognize each other’s perspective, and repair, rebuild and strengthen trust and respect in your relationship. We will help you release resentment and provide you with tools to be open and honest. Through the therapy process you will learn how to turn inward toward each other for support and comfort.

At Thrive Counselling, our family therapists work from a systemic lens; which means we are looking at the systems you are in: family, work, school, and extended family systems. These systems are never static, and so when there is a change with one member of a system, it means there is an impact on other members of the same system.
Your therapist will collaborate with you and your family to set goals and instill hope. Along the journey we will help everyone reach out to each other and regain the trust, respect and closeness that you all desire.
The relationship between each family member is the client focus for our family therapists. One of the core pieces with family therapy is being open, honest and attentive to other family members which we recognize can be emotionally charged. We will support and guide you and your family as you all share what feels comfortable and authentic.
When issues arise between parents and children/teens; no one is listening to each other; especially when emotions are activated. We are experts with conflict resolution and provide to families the tools to engage in communication and actively listen; sharing how everyone is feeling while still being respectful and having everyone’s needs met. Most importantly, we want to hear everyone’s perspective, as conflict often erupts because of miscommunication or assumptions.

Therapy is an integral piece of the healing process after drug or alcohol treatment has started and also helps recognize perspectives, and the process of repairing and understanding how to navigate ongoing relationships at school, work, and within families.
We understand that trust and respect need rebuilding; there is a whole spectrum of feelings going on. We also know you are the expert in your life but it is okay not to have all the answers right now.
Frequently with addictions, therapy is focused on the substance and the frequency of use. Our therapists want to understand the reason for the substance abuse/addiction.
Substance abuse and addictions create a cascading effect within a family – often impacting everyone. We offer therapy for the person coping with the addictive behaviour, and we also offer family therapy. We will work with everyone to re-establish connection and strengthen your relationships. Whoever it is in your family managing a substance abuse or addiction, we are here to help from a caring, non-judgmental perspective. Despite other members of your family appearing not to be affected, this is the opportunity for everyone to have a voice and share their experience.
Our compassionate approach is geared to keep your family connected, or re-connect in the healthiest way possible and move forward with confidence and clarity to support each other.

What is EMDR?
“Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is a set of standardized protocols that incorporates elements from many different treatment approaches. To date, EMDR therapy has helped millions of people of all ages relieve many types of psychological stress.” (EMDR Canada)
Is EMDR right for you?
EMDR has proven success with treating:
anxiety, panic attacks, stress, complicated grief, dissociative disorders, disturbing memories, pain disorders, addictions, depression, trauma, flashbacks, phobias, and sleep disturbances.
What to expect with EMDR therapy
Your therapist will schedule a couple of initial appointments to understand the nature of what is bringing you to therapy and assess whether EMDR may be an appropriate treatment option. The therapist will also take the time to explain what EMDR is and answer your questions before you begin the treatment process. Typically, a session with EMDR lasts 60 to 90 minutes. The number of EMDR sessions you may need will be determined by various factors including your life circumstances and previous trauma. EMDR can be integrated into a process of talk/regular therapy as well.

*Please note that when we are working with a child, the first appointment is with the parent(s) or guardian(s) of the child, without the child present.
It’s the worst feeling in the world when something isn’t right with your child. Maybe something has happened, and you’re worried about the impact it could have on your child’s life. Worries or fears, sadness or depression, bullying, the death of a family member or pet, a move or other transition, nightmares, behavior problems, and past trauma or abuse are all reasons that parents or caregivers might seek therapy to help a child.
Maybe you and your child just aren’t connecting. The bond between you seems off somehow, and you don’t know what went wrong. You’re tired, you’re stressed, and worst of all, you feel like a complete failure as a parent. It doesn’t have to be like this.
We offer play therapy for kids, family therapy, and parent support/coaching.
Your Thrive Counselling therapist is here to support you, too. We know how tough parenting can be, and we will give you the support you need.
Play therapy at Thrive Counselling can help your child resolve inner struggles, stresses, and fears.
If you and your child aren’t connecting, family therapy can help you heal your relationship, and feel close and happy together.
Parent coaching at Thrive Counselling can help you create a happy life for your family, and learn that you are the best parent your child could have.
Therapy at Thrive Counselling can help you and your child thrive, together.

Often being outside and moving our bodies can be integral in decreasing anxiety and reframing issues into new perspectives. This is a great alternative to an office setting, especially for new parents who want to keep their baby with them, people who enjoy movement, and for anyone who feels more comfortable talking side-by-side rather than face-to-face (or through secure video). If you are interested in Walk & Talk therapy, you will need to meet with your therapist at least once in-person or by secure video so they can assess if this therapy model is a good fit for you and provide additional forms for completion.
Where do Walk & Talk sessions take place?
Sessions take place around the walking trails at Assiniboine Park. A specific meeting place will be arranged when we set up your appointment.
How long is Walk & Talk therapy?
Session length will be 60 minutes. You can talk to your therapist if you would prefer a longer session.
Do you offer Walk & Talk therapy throughout the year?
Yes, but inclement weather, daylight hours, and events taking place in the park may limit our availability.
Is this therapy session a workout?
The goal with walk & talk therapy is to set a pace that is easy and comfortable for you regardless of physical fitness or ability.
What if I don’t like it?
We can’t switch your session setting once we arrive at the park, but we can change your future sessions to something more suitable for your needs, like a traditional office setting or secure video. Alternating sessions is also an option.
What about confidentiality?
Something to consider before Walk & Talk therapy is that you will be doing your therapy session in public. People may overhear you and your therapist talking, or someone may see you together. You might run into someone you know, or someone that your therapist knows who doesn’t realize you are in a session. If you choose therapy outside the office, you and your therapist will decide how to handle these situations if they occur.
I have an injury or limited mobility. Can I still do this type of therapy?
Of course, providing your physician consents. We want outdoor therapy available for everyone. We can choose locations that you can navigate in your wheelchair or sit on a bench if you’re injured or not up to walking for the entire hour.
Can I bring my baby and stroller?
Yes. Our priority is always providing the best possible therapy experience for you. We welcome you to bring your baby and will adjust your therapy session to allow time for you to attend to your baby’s needs.
Can I bring my dog?
Likely. You and your therapist can discuss the walking route and your therapist’s comfort level with dogs to determine if this will work. Service animals are always permitted.
Is Walk & Talk therapy suitable for family or couples therapy?
This therapy model could be useful and incorporated into family or couples therapy after discussion with your therapist. It is important to note that much of relational work is done intentionally to have the clients making eye contact and facing each other.
