Elliot Maxwell
MA Drama Therapy, CCC
Associate Therapist
Hi my name is Elliot and I am an Associate Therapist at Thrive Counseling. Since I was a child, I have always loved holding space for humans to feel emotions and grow. I have always felt infinite awe towards this intrinsic inner healer within us all, this instinctive resiliency. As an adult, I got my Masters in Drama Therapy, became a member of NADTA and began the journey of holding space in the professional realm. I am also a member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), with a CCC (Certified Canadian Counsellor) designation. I realized that as a drama therapist, it still held true what I loved so long ago- the immense healing in just creating a present, attuned, unconditional space to explore, humans will heal against any struggles.
I offer therapy services to individual adult clients with a client-centred, 2SLGBQTIA+ empowering, trauma informed, attachment informed approach. I will help you discover that you are loved, lovable and loving. I am but a guide and witness to your inner healer, and we will discover in many ways how to activate that and realize that you are able to manifest the life you want and rediscover a deep love for all that is you.
While I am clinically trained in Drama Therapy, and will weave that into my sessions; my therapy work is also informed through Dr. Yalom’s teachings. The focus is primarily existential psychology, the search and meaning in life and how we respond to issues; either in a functional or dysfunctional manner. I also use a humanistic approach as well; leaning into understanding more about who we are; self image; self esteem, and self actualization.
Through metaphor and story, you can work through trauma, relationship issues, anxiety, depression, and grief and discover ways to move through the problem and accept what you can’t change. Drama therapy allows more playful, creative and dynamic ways to be with pain and loss; it is perfect for relationship issues because we can role play and actively find solutions. We can do Projected Future Role Plays and work through what to say when you know you have a difficult conversation coming up and you’re feeling anxious about it – you can actively engage in different outcomes and find confidence in speaking your truth. If you feel somebody is living in your mind rent-free, drama therapy can allow you to externalize that person or inner part and give them less power over you.
When I’m not therapy-ing, my interests are films, reiki, oracle cards, crystal healing, astrology, Scorpio fuelled deep/spiritual chats, nature and building a securely attached relationship with my kitty cat. I identify as genderfluid, and go by he/she/they pronouns. If you feel the calling let’s begin (or jump back into) this healing journey together
